In première: Caroline Rose brengt vandaag haar nieuwe video uit bij het orgelgarage-kanon Bikini

Mocht je Caroline Rose uit New York nog niet kennen, vanaf vandaag zal je haar in ieder geval niet meer vergeten. Wij mogen vandaag de nieuwe video bij het manische nummer Bikini in première brengen, van Caroline Rose haar bijzonder energieke en kleurrijke album LONER.

Verslaving aan geld, ontrouwe vriendjes, eenzaamheid, onbedoelde zwangerschap, de dood en misogynie: je komt deze onderwerpen allemaal tegen in het pop-universum van Caroline Rose. Ze snijdt op het nieuwe album een aantal heftige onderwerpen aan, maar doet dat op een luchtige en humoristische manier. Waardoor haar kritiek alsnog aankomt, maar het zwaarmoedige uit het gepolariseerde debat haalt.

Haar tweede album kreeg onlangs trouwens nog een 7,6 van Pitchfork, die onder meer schreef: “In committing these anxieties to tape with such wit and good humor, in speaking for everyone who experiences similar problems on their own, she’s made reality a little bit easier to handle.” En niet alleen to tape, de video bij Bikini versterkt het effect nog met een factor tien.

Uit alles wat over haar geschreven wordt – van NPR tot Under The Radar en Consequence Of Sound – valt de focus op haar sterke persoonlijkheid, originaliteit en diversiteit. Wij kunnen ons alleen maar in dat rijtje scharen. Waarom? Dat lees en hoor je hieronder!

Bikini
Over de nieuwe orgelgarage-single heeft de muzikante het volgende te vertellen:

“A lot of my aesthetic tends to be very tongue-in-cheek, so I wanted to take a serious subject, in this case misogyny, and just sort of turn it around to laugh at it. I think satire can be used as an incredible tool to take the power away from the powerful when necessary. It was important to me to make sure the video was body positive. When we think of ‘girls in bikinis,’ the tendency is to see tall white models with perfect bodies. I knew that would be missing the point of the song.”

Haar invloeden haalt ze ondertussen uit alles van films tot TV-shows:

“I take a lot of influences from films, and you can see a lot of Almodovar’s influence here. I had a pretty concrete idea to make the video bright and cheerful, kind of like a mix between old TV performances in the 60s and 70s and The Price Is Right-esque game shows. Almodovar is a master at using visuals to enhance a serious story. The colors he used are a lot like the characters: vibrant and flamboyant. Here, I utilize something similar as a creative device to enhance the absurdism of a realistic situation.”

Op 5 juli speelt Caroline Rose in Paradiso en 8 juli op Metropolis Festival.
